Become a locavore!!

My family eat local challenge

July 2, 2010

Sustainable agriculture is a way of raising food that is healthy for consumers and animals, does not harm the environment, is humane for workers, respects animals, provides a fair wage to the farmer, and supports and enhances rural communities.

Local foods are produced as close to home as possible. Buying local supports a more sustainable food system because true sustainability goes beyond the methods used in food production to include every step that brings food from farm to plate.

Ok, my family is taking on the challenge of eating locally for one week.  Most of what we eat for the week will come from local farms and gardens.   There are many reasons why people choose do this.  Ther are those who rebel against the practices used to grow industurialized foods, those who want to have lessen the impact on the environment caused by shipping food all over the country, and I am sure many others.

I do agree with those reasons, but I really want my kids to know where their food comes from.  I want them to feel connected to the food, the land, and the farmers.  I want the same for myself!  I have the kind of kids that love to  frequent local places and get to know the owners and employees.  I am hoping by giving them that same connection the thier food sources it will help them make more thoughtful choices and to learn how those choices affect themselves, the community and the earth.  I know it sounds deep, but don't underestimate kids!  They can really surprise you with what they take to heart and put into practice.

So we will be visiting some local farmers markets, farms,  gardens, and even the supermarkets.  Shoprite in Montague has a large selection of locally grown produce.  I encourage  you to try it too.  You can start small.  Just choose one thing to focus on like vegetables.  Learn about eating seasonally and what grows in our area.  If you do try the challenge, I would love to hear from you!!
