The worms crawl in the worms crawl out...

Our adventure composting with worms!

August 5, 2010

Did I actually say yes when my kids asked if we could keep 1000 (not a typo) worms inthe house?  I believe I did, because here they are in a green Rubbermaid storage container.  We have decided to try composting with worms and it I must say it is quite fascinating.  We have 1000 red wrigglers and they love to eat our kitchen scraps.  They can eat up to 1/2 pound a day!  The castings (aka poop) that they produce is excellent for the garden.  Of course we had to study the biology of worms to go along with it.  We will also use the castings in one plant and not another and document the results.  It is a great learning experience and alot of fun, but it hasn't been with out its heartache.  While cleaning behind the end table I noticed two hard string like things on the floor.  Apparently they weren't satisfied with their meal!  They didn't get very far :)

If you would like to check out vermicomposting for yourself, this is a really fun, kid friendly site.

There are also lots of videos on You Tube on how to set up your worm bin.  We ordered our worms from http://www.unclejimswormfarm.com/   Lots of great info on that site as well.
